For this week's breach, Horizon House, Inc., a provider of mental health and residential treatment services experienced an attack on their IT systems. According to HIIPAA Journal, a total of 27,823 patients of Horizon House, in Philadelphia, had been potentially affected. This cost Horizon House an estimated $2,934,023, according to eRiskHub.

On March 2021, Horizon House became aware of suspicious activity that was detected in its computer systems. Certain information stored within their environment was potentially viewed or taken by an unknown user.

It was recently confirmed that it contained the following protected health information:

  • First and last names
  • Dates of birth
  • Driver's license numbers
  • Health insurance information
  • State identification card numbers
  • Social Security numbers
  • Medical history
  • Financial account information

How this could have been prevented

Do you have a Policies and Procedures manual in place for data breaches? If you do, do you update it accordingly? Do you follow the guidelines listed in them? How do you know if your employees are following the policies? Do you have checks and balances in place to monitor? Do you create an awareness for your employees to test them on their knowledge? Do you have resources that you can offer to each employee to ensure preparedness? If you don't have any policies in place, it's time to do so.
