Top 3 SEO Tips for Banks

Top 3 SEO Tips for Banks

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is a critical component of every bank’s marketing strategy. When building or updating your website, it’s important to consider how Google will interact with the site, and if it will rank well on Google search (or other search engines). When you rank on the first page of search results, you have a significantly higher chance of attracting traffic to your website and winning more customers. Here are a few tips for your financial institution website SEO strategy.

1. Focus on a Local Strategy

Any SEO work you’re going to put into your online presence is going to have an impact on searches around the country and even around the world. But unless you’re one of the large national players, it doesn’t provide much benefit to improve your rank in San Bernadino, California when you’re located in Wisconsin. Focus on the different ways you can improve your local ranking with keywords for your state, town and other local areas.

You can improve your ranking for local searches by including the following on your website:

  • Maps
  • Local images with descriptive alt tags (descriptions of the image or what the image represents)
  • Nearby metro keywords and/or links to local resources

Before worrying about ranking for something general like “auto loan rates,” try out some of the tactics above. Then, you can rank well in Google searches for banks in your town. These prospects are also higher quality leads because someone in your town is more likely to open an account or apply for a loan than someone who isn’t local.

2. Build a Solid Foundation for Basic Keywords

Don’t feel the need to rank for all relevant keywords right away. Build a solid foundation for the more basic keyword ideas, so you can keep incrementally adding detail on that page or elsewhere on the site that takes the audience deeper into the topic.

Consider the hierarchy of your content. Cover the broader idea with a good page of content, then as you continue to add videos, blog posts and more of more detailed content (covering longer tail keywords), you can draw people from the larger idea to the more specific ideas.

3. Start Blogging

Blog posts are an easy way to speak directly to the search queries you’re seeing. You can write about topics that might not work well with your product content but can still be addressed in a blog article. When you write an article rather than including content on a web page, it’s also an opportunity to go more in depth on the topic. You can showcase your expertise while also utilizing different variations of the keywords to help with your ranking. Blogging also shows you’re adding new, relevant content to your site, which search engines view as a plus for SEO, as well.

The best advice we can give is to simply try it out! SEO for banks can be a really fluid strategy that builds over time as you learn more about your audience. We know it can be intimidating, but you’re not going to mess things up experimenting with our tips above. Start small, measure your success in Google Analytics and adjust the strategy as needed. It really can be that simple!
